‘The Idol Hours’

Group show @ London Miles Gallery

November 12th to December 6th 2010

London, UK

This November 2010 London Miles gallery presents a themed group exhibition featuring a bold selection from the International Contemporary art movement.

Where contemporary artists hark back to the masters of past movements paying homage to what was not only inspirational to forming how they paint today, but to what has formed the whole epoch of creative output as we now know it.  For this ambitious project London Miles Gallery has hand picked a wide cross section of artists, from emerging British artists to newly established international artists.  All with the same goal; to pay respect to their elders.

_

For nearly the past century the art world has been dominated by concept.  The concept behind art and what it is that makes art. Pushing the boundaries of theory and the plane of creativity. From the ready-mades of Duchamp to the consumerist nature of Hirst and the YBA’s, the aftermath and social turbulence of the First World War seemed to change the nature of art and the way it was to think forever.

With a new era comes a new generation of artists. A new generation, to progress and push the boundaries of what has come before. Each artist evoking a sentiment which has spawned from a product that has been inspirational to them, and thus helping them reach the technical magnitude and diversity never before seen in the art world. In a world dominated by controversy and rebellion, we propose a rebellion against the rebellion. Therefore by way of gratitude each artist has chosen a work that has moulded them into the artist that they are today. Be it from the pointillist techniques of Seurat in his  ‘Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte’, to the groundbreaking take on chiaroscuro of Caravaggio, or the beautiful composition and design ethic of Mucha. Every artist, each with a distinct style of their own will take on the challenge of producing their own take on a work that has made them the artist they are today.

Featured Artists: Tiffany Liu, Plastic God, Stella Im Hultberg, Yumiko Kayukawa, Matthew Bone, Travis Lampe, Zoe Lacchei, Scott C., Scott Belcastro, Sergio Mora, Alex Young, Bob Dob, Joe Ledbetter, Lost Fish, David Marsh, Carrie Ann Baade, Tom Bagshaw, Luke Chueh, Carles Gomila, Xue Wang, Nom Kinnear King, Robert Marquez, Mike Bilz, Elizabeth Winnel, Jenny Bhat, 2H, Chris Murray, Ken Keirns, Justin Fry, Mad Steez, Kevin Earl Taylor and Ann Marshall.

Love is in the Hair

121x76cm /  48×20″ | oil, copper & gold leaf on cotton canvas

A naive and at the same fetish painting that borders the limits of the unchaste. The eroticism is always included in some form in the human figure, although it is best in its implicit than explicit form, suggested rather than described.

Inspired by Santa Magdalena. First it was painted naked and then wrapped  by hair and sheer fabrics. The title of the work alludes to the female hair fetish ( icon of Art Noveau ). Inspired of the song “Love is in the Air” by John Paul Young, a hit of the year Carles Gomila was born.

-

Madame Julie, from Perlita Circus

61x61cm / 24×24″ | oil on linen canvas

Miss Julie came to town from Europe, aims to set up outside for a few days and present her collection of wonders, a cast that reveals a familiarity revealed by the uniqueness of each character. Curtain up, be attentive to their direction, Miss Julie will guide you in this unprecedented spectacle.

Profile of futurist and ’20s inspiration. There is little expression lines on the face to focus all attention on the smoothness of the neck and hair on the curvature of the skull, and the counterpoint of the geometric hair cut. A real character.

-

Spanish Fortune Teller

122x122cm / 48×48″ | collage & oil on cotton canvas

Spanish Witch of the Order of the Flower: will condemn your soul if you do not buy her a flower.

Work inspired in the gypsies of the Plaza España in Seville. References to the old Spanish maters Goya and Velazquez with a touch of decadent French style bringing us, for a moment, closer to Ingres.

-

French Fortune Teller

121x76cm /  48×20″ | oil on cotton canvas

This bust is a recreation of the enigmatic portraits of Monsieur Ingres. A French witch of the Order of the Flower. Femme Fatale who predicts the future leaking intelligence with its charms, more befitting a flapper girl than an interpreter of divination.

Heavily inspired by the work of Ingres, and a review of the aesthetic of the ’40s used in fashion and film. The composition is based on the solid counterpoint formed between the range of brown and blue.

-

Make-up Goddess

145x145cm / 57×57″ | oil & gold leaf on jute canvas

India is the exaltation of humanity on a large scale: 16 official languages, 1,652 dialects and more than 2,000 castes, about 5 dominant religions, 500 ancient kingdoms and thousands and thousands of gods. So many gods, that may have one for each task, for each person and for each position. Gods sanctified secular issues such as cosmetics.

Inspired by kitsch culture so rooted in the Indian taste that is so comfortable in its motley sacred spaces.

-

61x61cm / 24×24″ | oil on linen canvas

The clown is a transparent character who never practiced a pose. Borges said that for that reason, clowns are always sad.

The eyes have been exaggerated to suggest sincerity, while the background of thick red brushstrokes, reveal a psychology installed in the eye of the hurricane.

-

Venvs Strikes Back

241x101cm /  95×40″ | oil on linen canvas

Botticelli adorned the naked of Venus under a waterfall of hair, dispatching the viewer’s imagination the idleness of solve the hidden parts, as the numbers in a sudoku. Now Venus would be born so brazen, fresh, gourmet fighter that cherubim  will cry of pure emotion, blinded by her great passion. Now, as always, Venus is still the coolest of Parnassus, home of the Muses.

Executed with cold and warm pastel colors, design inspired by the old cookies boxes. The effect aims to provoke the paradoxical sense of frivolous warmth. The radiant lines suggest wealth of contrasts and an outline of danger.

-

Japanese Mouse

145x145cm / 57×57″ | acrylic  & oil on jute canvas

-

Sea Goddess I

145x145cm / 57×57″ | oil & gold leaf on linen canvas

Every movement, every humble gesture is the projection of a skill that transmutes the goddess in an illusion, moving her away, for a moment, of  the modesty that comes from being just a pin-up. This goddess  born and die every day with the sun, her crown.

Inspired by the Pin-up and pop culture. The model used to do the figure remind us, however, the late eighteenth century. The tentacles are a wink to the ancient Japanese art that was so fond of installing these animals in erotic scenes.

-

Sea Goddess II

200x160cm / 79×63″ | oil & gold leaf on linen canvas

Pirate Mermaid sailor eater.

The face is an interpretation of the model used in the eighteenth century lithographs.  The heraldic border that contains the signature is found on the Vatican doors, the crosses on his collar are a macabre way to count the number of sailors devoured by her.

-

The French Lion

241x101cm /  95×40″ | oil on linen canvas

The French Hercules, wearing a lion fur and able to lift incredible  heavy weights.

A work entirely inspired by old study photographs. Has been painting mainly “alla prima” with a technique similar to that used by Velazquez.

-

Snake Charmer

76x76cm / 30×30′ | oil & copper leaf on cotton canvas

Coming from a remote location from the Orient, this young beauty is able to fascinate the snakes to the point of confusion with their own movements. Beauty, danger and self-control: the three essential qualities for a femme fatale.

The background, with the crown, is an interpretation of the design of the labels of liquor bottles and cigars boxes. The hieratic character and  the kimono are Indian and Japanese inspired, and her face has the typical features of a humanized porcelain doll. Snakes in the head are a reference to the Greek myth of Medusa, that with just one glaze will convert  you in a stone.

-

100x50cm / 39×20″ | oil and gold leaf on jute canvas

Oscar Wilde said that only sacred things deserve to be profane, and I would add also the opposite: only the profane worth to be sacred. Profane love, the wound of love transcended to religious icon.

Painted ‘alla prima’. The work was conceived with several planes and semi transparent layers, creating a depth of color and unusual texture.

-

195x120cm / 77×47″ | acrylic & oil on jute canvas

The prosperous city of Atlantis did not sink. The mythic erratic whale  transported on its back the city of golden domes, to the ends of the earth, saved from its downfall, but it was to stay adrift forever

Exceptional work in the production of Carles Gomila, not being protagonist the human figure. Inspired by the story of Sinbad, where an island is revealed as a giant turtle

-

Anatomy of Pagane System

241x101cm /  95×40″ | oil on linen canvas

Diva of paganism .Luxury, decadence, arrogance and power of thrive roses in the darkness. The Rebirth of Venus is the maximum projection of the classical values of art in the contemporary world. Aphrodite can not be born today as she did in antiquity, although it is still a goddess and appreciates a certain decorum in their presentation.

Inspired on French Art Noveau theater posters divas. Soft modeling but heavily circumscribed. The copper leaf wreath suggests the sun setting.

-

Famous ‘W’ Brothers

220x140cm / 87×55″ | oil and gold leaf on linen canvas

Famous old acrobats, immortalized in their most glorious moment for a  luxury poster.

Inspired by the old study  photographs with and static pose. The work offers a wink to the look of Freddy Mercury and reminds us that despite all, ‘The show must go on’. the full name of the painting is “Wing Brothers”, and the signature is executed like the design of the labels of the boxes cigars.

-

Sargantain

76x76cm / 30×30′ | oil on cotton canvas

Witch who casts a spell with four arms, two hands and a deep look overshadow us, two other hands secretly abduct and  reach the heart to the slightest slip. Beautiful and dangerous, as the most attractive and hypnotic things of this world.

The face is a hybrid between an adult and a porcelain doll. Deep green emerald remind us the coldness of a reptile, and the pink daggers a sweet effectiveness.
